USGBC Central Texas - Balcones Chapter to Host International Climate Change Expert

May 19, 2010 - The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Central Texas-Balcones Chapter will host climate change expert from New Zealand, Helen Plume, for a lecture on Tuesday, June 15 at the Austin Convention Center. A principal analyst in the Climate and Risk Directorate at the Ministry for the Environment in Wellington, New Zealand, Plume has been instrumental in building the reputation for leadership on climate change that New Zealand holds in the world today. A free tour of the Austin Convention Center’s LEED retrofitting activities will be available for attendees prior to the event.

We are excited to have Helen share an international perspective on the subject and discuss the various climate change programs she has encountered and their applicability to Central Texas,” says Heather Venhaus, immediate past Chair of the USGBC Central Texas – Balcones Chapter. “Cities are home to over half of the World’s population and are responsible for more than two-thirds of global energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Through a diverse suite of educational programming and the implementation of LEED, the USGBC and its chapters are helping to promote the sustainable growth and evolution of cities by reducing their negative impact on climate change.

Plume has just completed a two year term as Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) under the United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change. In 2009, she participated in the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen where her committee covered a broad agenda of areas such as adaptation to the impacts of climate change, technology transfer, deforestation, research, and methodologies for greenhouse gas inventories.

Tickets for the presentation may be purchased through the chapter’s website www.usgbc-centraltexas.org for an early bird rate of $35 for USGBC Chapter members and $50 for non-members until June 4th. After June 4th, tickets will be $50 for Chapter members and $65.00 for non-members and will also be available at the door, if it is not sold out. A meet and greet reception with Mrs. Plume will follow the lecture and is included in the ticket price.

This presentation is part of the USGBC Central Texas – Balcones Chapter’s ongoing lecture series, which features environmental experts from around the world. Established in 2003, the Chapter is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to accelerating the transformation toward sustainable building and land development practices in Central Texas through innovation, advocacy, and partnerships. It hosts LEED® related workshops and study groups, holds educational sessions on sustainable technologies and applications, and offers networking events for people associated with green-building.
